WE’RE NUMBER 1!

My name is Amber, and I am the Director of Engineering for the Univ. of MN Solar Vehicle Project (UMNSVP). First and foremost, I would like to thank you for all of your past contributions to the team. I was part of the race crew that just returned as victors from the American Solar Challenge (ASC), and the panels that you cut for our chassis were integral in making sure that our 14th car, Freya, was structurally sound. On the team, we uphold ourselves to the phrase “reliability wins,” and we would never be able to achieve the level of reliability that we do without the support from companies like yours.

Thank you!

Student working - U of M

The carbon fiber aluminum core composite sheets must maintain structural integrity and be light weight. Since the panels are composites sheets of mixed material, delamination is an expensive risk.

Since 1984, Jet Edge has been designing and manufacturing Ultra-High Pressure Waterjet Technology that doesn’t back down.

UMNSVP is an entirely student-run group that designs, builds, and races solar-electric cars. Freya is the team’s most recent car and has just returned from winning the American Solar Challenge! This was a 1,400 mile race against collegiate teams from across the US and Canada.

Our student group relies heavily on a community of supporters committed to advancing technology with more than just words. When the student workshop didn’t have the capabilities to cut our chassis panels, we contacted Jet Edge Waterjet Systems a supporter of the University of Minnesota Solar Vehicle Project for nearly a decade! We worked directly with Brian, a leading expert in waterjet applications.

With some CAD files, a stack of carbon fiber aluminum core composite sheets and never enough time in the day, Brian used his four decades of experience to program the waterjet dimensionally. Since the panels are composites sheets of mixed material, delamination is an expensive risk.

Jet Edge cut the panels for the chassis of two of the team’s cars- Eos II and Freya. Combined, these cars have competed in five races across Australia and the US! Brian used his expertise and did an amazing job on tight timelines.
