THE PUMP AND MOTION SYSTEM MUST WORK TOGETHER TO DELIVER PREMIUM CUT QUALITY
Often when Water Jet Cutting Machine operators experience variation in cut quality, they look to the motion system to identify the root cause of the problem. While this might be a good place to start, the caution is it can lead to mis-diagnosing the issue as nozzle or orifice wear, garnet quality, water pressure or cut speeds.
HYDRAULIC SPIKES ARE THE ENEMY OF CUT QUALITY AND PUMP LIFE
When the Intensifier changes direction (cycles) during operation, the hydraulic system pressure and flow momentarily fluctuate due to the change in direction. This shift causes spikes in the hydraulic system, which in turn, delivers a spike through the High Pressure water system. If the Hydraulic pressure spikes are not properly dampened, the resultant pulse in the HP waterjet stream can be delivered to the cutting head and cause striations in the material being cut. Over time, these spikes will fatigue pump components prematurely and reduce pump life. Two features in a Jet Edge pump work together to regulate the spike.
The Attenuator acts as a storage/buffering water receptacle providing smooth continuous water pressure to your cutting or cleaning device. It smooths out pulses and protects the HP water components from pressure spikes that occur while cycling your Ultra High Pressure Intensifier Pump. Jet Edge utilizes a large 2-quart (1.9 Liter) Attenuator on pumps more than 50Hp and a 1-quart (.95 Liter) Attenuator for 50Hp and smaller pumps, that directly seals the Head to the Body and eliminates the Seal wear component thus extending the service life of the Attenuator.
An HP Attenuator (see above) provides the minimal buffering required to reduce the level of the HP water spikes and most pump manufacturers stop at that. However, Jet Edge does not believe that is enough and incorporates a Hydraulic Accumulator into the hydraulic system to further reduce spikes in both the hydraulic system and HP water system. The Accumulator’s bladder is pressurized with nitrogen and smooths out pulses that occur while cycling your Ultra High Pressure Intensifier Pump. This additional buffering protects the hydraulic components from pressure spikes that lead to component fatigue and premature hose failure thereby maintaining cut quality and reducing maintenance costs.
